The history of the Museo de Mallorca
The Museo de Mallorca was opened in 1976 and is now regarded as one of the island’s most important cultural and historical museums. Its mission is to present the development of Mallorca from prehistoric times to the present day. The Palacio Aiamans as the museum’s location
The museum’s main headquarters is located in the historic Palacio Aiamans in the heart of Palma. This city palace was built around 1630 on the foundations of one of the oldest Arab-Renaissance buildings in Mallorca. Known locally as the “House of the Great Christian Lady”, the palace itself is an architectural landmark that reflects several centuries of Mallorcan history.
Collections and exhibitions
The Museo de Mallorca houses a diverse collection of ceramics, stone fragments, paintings, jewellery, sculptures and historic furniture. These exhibits reflect the cultural identity of Mallorca and illustrate the island’s development over time. The combination of archaeological finds and fine art makes the museum particularly engaging and informative.
Main building and branch locations
In addition to its main site in Palma, the Museo de Mallorca operates two branch locations. The branch in Muro focuses on ethnology and documents everyday life in Mallorca before the rise of mass tourism. The Alcúdia branch is dedicated to Roman archaeology and is closely linked to the remains of the ancient Roman city of Pollentia. It is also known as the “Museu Monogràfic de Pol·lentia”.
